It is believed through archaeological evidence that points to the domestication of vitis vinifera somewhere in the Caucasus around 6000 BCE, and to the discovery of winemaking shortly after.

One of the six (6) prestigious DOCG red wines of Italy, Carmignano wines are recognized as the origins of the popular red wine blends of Tuscany, known as Super Tuscans.

Years ago, the growers and winemakers of Carmignano decided to give up the Chianti denomination and obtain their own designation. Their request was approved in 1975 and the newly revised regulations took effect the same year. The first citations of Carmignano wine go back to the 14th century, and documents drawn up in 1369 show that Carmignano wines cost four times as much as any other wine in that period and were one of the most valuable commodities in all of Europe.
