This wine should not be confused with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a Tuscan red wine made from Sangiovese along with other grapes, but not the Montepulciano grape variety found in Montepulciano d'Abruzzo red wine.
The quality of Montepulciano wines produced in Abruzzo (especially in the province of Chieti) has been constantly improving in the last ten years, making Abruzzo, once a backwater in winemaking, one of the most interesting locales in the Italian scene.
Morellino di Scansano is recognized and classified in Italy as a superior wine, which was a matter of common knowledge throughout Europe more than a century ago.
