About Sicily Italy

Sicily ItalySicily has more vineyards than any other Italian region, competing with Apulia (Puglia) for first place as the largest wine producer. Sicilian grapes play a large role in creating dessert wines, which require a higher concentration of grape.

In the world of international wine, Sicily is renowned for many outstanding dessert wines, such as the world-famous Marsala. The Regions enormous grape yields, along with recent technological advances and improved infrastructure allowed for Sicilian vintners to begin creating exciting varietals for the world to experience. The change in focus mirrors the change in Puglia, also forcing Sicilian vintners to focus on quality, branded, and bottled wines.

Sicily's climate, sun, and rocky soil is very similar to the wine growing region of Napa Valley in the U.S. The most popular grapes for whites are Catarratto Bianco, Inzoli, Grillo, Chardonnay, and Damaschino. These grapes make wine ideally suited for the dry hot climate of Sicily and cuisine that is heavy on seafood. For wine lovers only familiar with the major grape varieties, Sicily provides a whole new experience.
