Morellino Di Scansiano DOC
Winemaker Notes:
Morellino di Scansano is classified in Italy as a Superior wine. The Grapes are harvested and sorted by hand to ensure highest quality and selection. This classic Italian red wine hails from one of the most renowned and oldest growing regions in all of Tuscany, and Italy.
The excellent quality of wines from Scansano was a matter of common knowledge more than a century ago. During the early production years the local farmers coined the name Morellino to identify themselves and the quality of the sangiovese grape that grows in this relatively small region within Tuscany.
The Morellino (or sangiovese) grapes from Scansano are smaller, more concentrated, and much darker in color than the traditional sangiovese grapes grown elsewhere in Tuscany; due in part to the local climate and proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and fertile soil of the surrounding area.
The wine is made of 100% Morellino di Scansano and is aged for 12 months; 6 months in French Oak Barrels and 6 months in bottle. It should be noted that the fermentation process starts with a 15 day maceration process, which keeps the grape skins in contact with the juice longer than normal. This process creates the wonderful, rich and full, yet soft body that is characteristic of this wine. At sight this wine is deep ruby red in color tending towards garnet.
The nose is vinous, delicate and with clear characteristics, and tends to become softer with age. The flavors first impact is equally sapid, slightly tannic, warm and soft, with a long, pleasantly smooth and persistent finish. It has a softer body and more subtle feel that it’s cousin – Chianti.
An exceptional wine to be enjoyed solo by the glass or paired with roasted or grilled meats, barbeque, pasta, and pizza too.
