Wine Notes:

The name "Podere Le Poggiarelle" is known as such because it is situated on a series of small “poggi” or knolls that cascade through the hills of Montalbano, and Poggiarelle, which is a diminutive way to say several small hills, in the district of Carmignano. Produced within strict DOCG guidelines, standards, and controls, and production laws set by the Consorzio di Vini Carmignano, Carmignano is one of the smallest DOCG production zones in Italy.

Made with the finest selection of grapes and by original DOCG and Consorzio di Vini Carmignano specifications, the Podere Le Poggiarelle Carmignano is a classic and authentic style Carmignano blend. Centuries ago, Carmignano wines were the most valuable wines produced in Italy and mostly reserved for members of royal families, kings, and rulers of different regions throughout Europe.

The first citations of this wine go back to the 14th century, and documents drawn up in 1369 show that Carmignano wines cost four times as much as any other wine in that period and one of the most valuable commodities in all of Europe. In 1716, the Grand Duke of Tuscany; Cosimo III de Medici, issued a decree that established production standards and controls, intended to prevent fraud. The edict clearly represents the first Italian wine discipline.

Over two centuries later, the terms were reapplied in setting the boundaries of Carmignano and re-establishing the Congregation. The organization supervises the ancient Carmignano denomination of origin within the area first delimited by the edict of 1716. The statutes contain 35 articles, placing special importance on controls in planting vines, quality checks on the grapes at harvest, and the wine in the winery before bottling, making this one of the most controlled wines in Tuscany.

Winemaker Notes:

A real gem, this wine is deep ruby red in color with a full and rich body. The bouquet is wide and well structured with great intensity and persistence. Most interesting is the perfect marriage that comes out between red ripe fruits, wild berries, and the vanilla and spicy notes of the French Allier barriques. The flavors first impact is warm and soft, expanding more and more and marked by the good tension of the tannins and by the confirmation of the rich intense body. The finish is long, pleasant and fulfilling.

This wine becomes more refined for 6 to 10 years or longer.

Decanting Highly Recommended.

Pairing:

Pairs exceptionally well with wild game, roasted or grilled meats, and savory pasta dishes.
