Wine Notes:
The most well known of the classic southern Italian red wines and an exceptional example of the traditional style quality wines produced in Salento and region of Apulia.
This wine is part of an assortment of wines that have been researched and developed over many years. The history of Salice Salentino wines dates back to the 6th century b.c.. This classic red blend is one of the most well known wines from southern Italy and probably the most well known wine from Salento.
Apulia, located at the heel of the Italian boot, is the largest wine area of the world. Alone, it produces as much wine as all of Australia. In the past, quantity was more important than quality, but recently quality has become the only consideration for serious growers and winemakers. Italian wines from this region now offer the best values; low prices and constantly improving wines.
The Salice Salentino DOC covers the whole region around Salento and the varietals mainly grown in the district for Salice Salentino wines are Negroamaro, the robust grape with structure and good fruit concentration, and Malvasia Nera, which is sweeter and adds charm to the austerity of Negroamaro.
Winemaker Notes:
At sight this wine is a concentrated deep purple red color. The bouquet is persistent with the austerity of Negroamaro and the gentle sweetness of Malvasia Nera. The delicious nose has strong scents of the oak barriques, ripe red fruits, licorice, and a hint of green figs. The taste is long on the palate with a nice tannin expression, expressed in density more than in weight, and a pleasant acid vein that fills every corner of the mouth, leading to a long, fulfilling finish.
This wine can be enjoyed young and becomes more refined for 5 to 6 years.
At its best when opened 45 minutes or longer prior to serving.
Pairing:
Pairs well with roasted or grilled meats, hearty meat sauce or seafood pasta, fried fish, shellfish, and risotto.
