Wine Notes:
This wine hails from one of the oldest wine producing areas in Italy and is of the grape known locally as Morellino; that derives its name from the typical small, black horses of the Maremma, to define its rich dark color and small grape size.
Morellino di Scansano is classified in Italy as a superior wine, which was a matter of common knowledge throughout Europe more than a century ago. It has a softer body and more subtle feel that it’s cousin Chianti.
The Morellino (or sangiovese) grapes from Scansano, in the southwestern region of Tuscany known as the Maremma, are smaller, more concentrated, and much darker in color than the traditional Sangiovese grapes grown elsewhere in Tuscany; due in part to the local climate and fertile soil of the surrounding area. The soil of the Maremma consists predominantly of fragmented sandstone, to which characteristically is added the lava composites from the age when Mt. Amiata still was an active volcano. The lava presence gives the vines a mineral character and tastiness typical for the area. Add to this a mild climate, with warm summers and winters and average amount of rain, and you have ideal factors for a splendid grape maturation, even in less advantaged vintages.
The Maremman land which is highly regarded for the extraordinary quality of its wines, find fame and celebrity at both a national and international level. Some of the more famous wines include the Montecucco Rosso DOC and Morellino di Scansano DOCG, produced with Sangiovese grapes.
Winemaker Notes:
It should be noted that the fermentation process starts with a 15 day maceration process, keeping the grape skins in contact with the juice longer. This process creates the wonderful, warm, rich, full, soft body that is characteristic of this wine. At sight a deep ruby red color tending towards garnet. The nose is vinous, delicate and with clear characteristics, and tends to become even softer with age. The flavors first impact is equally sapid, slightly tannic, warm and soft, with a long, pleasantly smooth and persistent finish.
Wines from this appellation are usually suited to moderate aging and may also be drunk young.
At its best when opened at least 45 minutes or longer prior to serving.
Pairing:
This is a smooth yet robust wine suitable to serve with strongly flavored dishes, roasted or grilled meats.
