Wine Notes:

Nero d'Avola is the most important red wine grape in Sicily and is one of Italy's most important indigenous varieties and it is named after Avola, a small town in the far south of Sicily and its wines are compared to New World Shirazes, with sweet tannins and plum or peppery flavors.

Nero d'Avola is also a large contributor to the popular Marsala blend wines of Sicily. "The Black Grape of Avola" appears to have been selected by growers near Avola, a small town in southeast Sicily, several hundred years ago.

Initially, it was confined to the southern tip of the island but more recently has spread throughout the island and up the slopes of the Etna Volcano; however, its best samples are still produced in this part of Sicily due to excellent climate and rich mineral soil.

From the slopes of Mt. Etna volcano on the island of Sicily comes this amazing southern Italian classic rd wine. An indigenous to Sicily, and Italy, it is one of the most renowned grapes in all of Italy for the diverse regional characteristics it displays and the consistent quality wines it produces. The vineyard which produces this wonderful wine is situated on the lower slopes of the volcano. In this geographic zone the grapes take on special characteristics because the fields are mostly volcanic ash and lava rock. These soil features inpart an earthy minerality in the wine that is one of the finest characterisitcs of Sicilian wines and this region.
